"Many NHS staff from a wide range of disciplines participate in international development programmes and respond to humanitarian emergencies. Such work can be of lasting value to the people concerned."
Sir Liam Donaldson, Former Chief Medical Officer for England
About Addenbrooke's Abroad
Addenbrooke's Abroad was established in 2006 in response to increasing recognition within the NHS and at Cambridge University Hospitals (CUH) that engaging with global health has benefits for patients and health care workers both overseas and in the UK.
CUH is one of few NHS Foundation Trusts to have a dedicated unit supporting global health activity.
The main aim of Addenbrooke’s Abroad is to support positive, sustainable change in healthcare by facilitating international partnerships (Links) with hospitals and health organisations in the developing world.
To achieve our aim we support staff and students of Cambridge University Hospitals and the local health community to make practical contributions to global health by volunteering.

Making a world of difference
"Before joining Addenbrooke's Abroad, I'd spent several years working overseas in resource-poor countries. I know how stimulating a challenge like this can be. You'll return to the UK with new skills and a valuable new perspective – essential in these turbulent times!" Evelyn Brealey, Project Manager, Addenbrooke’s Abroad
Addenbrooke’s Abroad is a charity and most overseas volunteers pay their own costs - they do not receive funding from NHS resources. To make a real difference to global healthcare we depend on volunteers both overseas and in the UK. If you would like to help, you could:
- Offer your skills and expertise as an Addenbrooke’s Abroad Volunteer
- Volunteer to help with the administration of Addenbrooke’s Abroad
- Raise funds for Addenbrooke’s Abroad
- Make a donation to support Addenbrooke’s Abroad.
